Fire Shut Up in My Bones

An excerpt taken from Opera Theater St. Louis showcasing an aria from Fire Shut Up in My Bones. Based on Charles Blow’s memoir of the same name, Fire Shut Up in My Bones is the second opera by Blanchard, an acclaimed Grammy-winning American jazz trumpeter and composer. Blanchard is also a film score composer, having worked on every Spike Lee movie since Jungle Fever in 1991. Last year, Blanchard was nominated for his first Academy Award for best original score for BlacKkKlansman

Metropolitan Opera general manager, Peter Gelb, told the New York Times that the work could premiere on a New York stage as soon as the 2021-22 season. When the work premises under the baton of Met music director Yannick Nézet-Séguin at the Metropolitan Opera, it will mark the first time in the Met’s 136-year history that the company will stage an opera by a black composer. This performance of Ms. Burton was documented live in St. Louis via iPhone from an audience member.
